PROMETHEUS (News Update + Plot Reveal)

  • PROMETHEUS

As momentum builds for Ridley Scott's Prometheus, writer-producer Damon Lindelof has decided to share some insight on what to expect from this upcoming quasi-Alien prequel-thing.

MTV sat down with the former Lost executive producer to get the latest scoop on what's in store. In regards to cast member Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Lindelof said that they're taking a different approach to the android subset in Prometheus.

"He plays a robot," Lindelof said. "One of the things that evokes the idea of Blade Runner is, 'What does the movie look like from the robot's point of view?' If you were to ask him, 'What do you think about all of this? What's going on? What do you think about these humans who are around you?,' wouldn't it be cool if we found a way for that robot to answer those questions. When you cast a guy like Fassbender, who's going to bring a lot more to it... it's not Anthony Daniels. All due respect. He's phenomenal. But C-P3O..."

Lindelof added that they are attempting to recreate that same ensemble feel that made the first Alien so great. With Prometheus, there probably won't be a clear-cut protagonist from the get-go.

"I think one of the really cool things about the first Alien, if you watch it cold, Ripley is kind in the background like one of the crew members... and suddenly Sigourney Weaver, in the last 40 minutes of the movie, is the only one left alive. I think the idea of building a really cool ensemble and again presenting the audience with like, 'Who's going to be left standing at the end of this movie?' Maybe all of them. Probably not."

The official synopsis recently released describes Prometheus as a "groundbreaking mythology in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race."

Prometheus is currently slated for a June 2012 release. Stay tuned for more details as they come.
