JACK RYAN (Director Found)

  • KENNETH BRANAGH TO DIRECT JACK RYAN

Kenneth Branagh
Following last week's update that saw formally-attached director Jack Bender departing Paramount Pictures' still-untitled Jack Ryan project, comes word, via Variety, that Kenneth Branagh has now taken the reins.

Chris Pine is still attached to play the Tom Clancy character, which has previously appeared in the novel-to-screen adaptations The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears.

Producer Mace Neufeld previously spoke with ComingSoon.net about the next chapter in the popular franchise.

"We pick him up when he's on Wall Street," he said. "...[but] the Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They're kind of 'thinking man's thrillers.' Jack is referred to as a 'water-walker' because of his ability to jump ahead to conclusions. That's very big in all the Jack Ryan films and that's how we want to portray him. He's a teacher. He's a historian. He's a linguist. And he's really smart."

Branagh, who most recently directed Thor, is also attached to direct The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society for 20th Century Fox with Kate Winslet in the lead. Which project moves forward first, though, remains to be seen.

PROMETHEUS (Ridley speaks 3D)

  • PROMETHEUS

Total Film sat down with Sir Ridley Scott recently to talk about his long-awaited return to the Alien universe, Prometheus.

How much of Ridley Scotts Prometheus is connected to his first Sci-fi flick Alien??

And while everybody must be incredibly keen to see just how much Prometheus ties into the Alien mythology, there’s another aspect to the film that’s exciting. This will mark Scott’s first film with 3D.

TotalFilm: How was it working in 3D?

Ridley Scott: “I'm kind of naturally visual anyway, that's where I come from. And you're working off superb 3D screens, which are on the floor, and are really big. It was just wonderful.

I was shooting on 3D, then seeing it on the floor. It was easy, I must say.”

TF: Do you push it in a way we haven't seen before?

RS: “Well, I mean, yeah. You only want to push it so far, before it becomes arrows popping out of the screen and stabbing you in the eye. You use it for visual effect.”

TF: Is it more immersive, giving depth?

RS: “Yes, yes. And you can do that afterwards, by the way. I'm actually decided right now how deep to make it on certain sequences.

So you can literally, as it were, twiddle a knob, and the depth will increase. It's kind of bizarre, but there it is. Technologically it's absolutely staggering.

I was working with MPC in London, looking after almost 1,300 big FX shots, and every night they would pipe through shots to a big screen in my office in Lexington Street; I would sit there watching a sequence that had just been graded or refined in perfect 3D. Really amazing.”
