INTO THE WOODS (Cast News)

  • INTO THE WOODS

The Hollywood Reporter says that Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhaal are in talks to join Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep in director Rob Marshall's adaptation of the Broadway musical Into the Woods.

Chris Pine & Jake Gyllenhaal
Into the Woods weaves together the story of several of the most beloved fairytales (Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel) into the original story of a Baker and his wife who try to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child, exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests and their desire for “happily ever after.”

With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book and direction by James Lapine, "Into the Woods" earned 10 nominations at the 1988 Tony Awards, winning three including best score and best book of a musical. The 2002 Broadway revival won a Tony for best revival of a musical.

According to the trade, Gyllenhaal and Pine would play the musical's two princes, Cinderella’s Prince and Rapunzel's Prince, brothers who are pompous and self-absorbed.

Walt Disney Pictures is expected to start filming in August. James Lapine wrote the script for the film, which is produced by John DeLuca.

GEARS OF WAR (In Development)

  • GEARS OF WAR

Plans for a feature film version of the Epic video game Gears of War amped up last year and, now, Variety is reporting that Scott Stuber has come aboard the project as a producer.

Since its debut in November 2006, Gears of War has broken sales records on the Xbox 360, selling more than 4.5 million copies worldwide (it sold 3 million copies in the first 10 weeks after launch).

The game thrusts players into humankind's epic battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet. The story unfolds as a ragtag group of soldiers use every last ounce of strength to survive the onslaught from the forces of evil, which begins on the historic Emergence Day.

Stuber, who most recently produced films like Ted, Battleship and Identity Thief, has a first look deal with Universal Pictures, but no distributor is currently attached to Gears of War.
