STAR TREK 2 (Casting News)

Benedict Cumberbatch
British actor Benedict Cumberbatch (better known as TV's Sherlock and as the voice of Smaug the dragon in The Hobbit) has reportedly joined the cast of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek sequel.

Deadline claims Cumberbatch "has been cast in a lead role in the film. No word yet on whether he'll be a hero or villain."

Variety, however, says "Cumberbatch has been tapped to play the villain in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2. Cumberbatch landed the role that Edgar Ramirez had auditioned for last month."


Cumberbatch is currently onscreen in supporting roles in War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Variety adds that actor Noel Clarke has also been cast as a "a family man with a wife and young daughter."
