Zac Efron, who began his career as the star of the Disney Channel's "High School Musical" series before transitioning into a movie star, has been picked to headline Are We Officially Dating, directed by Tom Gormican from his own screenplay, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie, which will be shopped by QED International to foreign buyers at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, which is based around three New York City friends who make a pact to remain single just as they start falling in love. Plans are to start filming the comedy in New York in November. Gormican's screenplay was the top-rated comedy on the 2010 Blacklist where industry folk pick their favorite unproduced screenplays of the year.

In a statement, co-producer Justin Napi of Treehouse Pictures said:

“'Are We Offically Dating?' is a story about timing and your twenties, and just how difficult it can be. We’re thrilled to be teaming with Tom Gormican on his relatable script which will resonate with a large audience."

QED International CEO Bill Block added:

“We strongly believe in the global appeal of this project and we’re excited to work with the team at Treehouse Pictures to bring it to market in Toronto. 'Are We Officially Dating?' is an excellent addition to QED’s growing sales slate, and underscores our commitment to commercial, filmmaker-driven product.”
